Robert Trent Jones Jr. and his father Robert Trent Jones have designed over 500 courses worldwide and are probably the most well-known golf designers in the world. Most recently he designed Chambers Bay, which was the site of the 2015 US Open. Speaker
Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Robert Trent Jones, Jr. (Bobby) is the founder of Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects. Born in 1939, he spent his early years learning about golf at Winged Food Golf Club. After studying at Yale and Stanford University, he graduated into the family business.

Working beside his father on the legendary Spyglass Hill and other western projects in the1960’s, Jones apprenticed with his father for several years. He went on to assume control of West coast operations where he eventually expanded the company’s business to Asia. In 1972, he left his father’s firm and founded Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects.

Combining a renowned legacy in golf with his own dynamic approach to architecture, he has designed more than 270 golf courses in more than 40 countries on six continents. His courses have won countless awards and accolades, been ranked among the best layouts throughout the world, and hosted tournaments on every major golf tour. Robert Trent Jones II’s Chambers Bay hosted the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2011 and the U.S. Open in 2015.

As the pioneering golf course architect in Asia, he saw the growth of the game in Asia in the early 1970’s and established in office in the region to serve the Asia-Pacific market. He designed the second golf course in China (Shanghai Country Club) and four of his seven designs in China are listed among the top ten golf courses nationally, including the number one course, Spring City in Kunming.

Jones is a member of the California Golf Hall of Fame; a long-standing member, former president, and current board member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects; and the recipient of many other industry awards and honors. He is the author of the book, Golf by Design, and numerous articles and stories about golf course design around the world. He is also the former Chairman of the California State Park Commission.

With a focus on environmental stewardship and a commitment to design that works closely with the existing terrain, he continues to find the artful balance between the challenges of the game and the beauty of the land.
