Who are we?

We are a community handbell choir with ties to San Francisco State University. Contact us at charnly@sfsu.edu.

SF State Handbell Choir, founded in 1997 by University librarian Caroline Harnly, is a mixture of SF State faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends. We ring on 5 octaves of Schulmerich handbells and on 4 octaves of Malmark handchimes.

We play about 10 concerts a year, performing at various campus events, at senior residences in San Francisco and on the Peninsula, and as part of Redwood City's annual "Hometown Holidays" celebration. Twice a year we perform with the Temple Hill Choir, an auditioned vocal choir based in Oakland. We also participate in the annual "Days of Christmas" concert series at Temple Hill in Oakland.

We frequently perform as a small ensemble of five, playing what is known as "12-bell music." For these performances, we only use 12 handbells and play from music stands instead of in the traditional "off-the-table" style.
