Consent: Your Favorite New Sex Toy!
Lecture & Discussion, Verbal Participation Required
Tuesday, February 9, 2016
B1, Oakland Campus
7:15 pm - 8:45 pm
You’re never too young or too old, too busy or too jaded, to learn about consent. We learn about the birds and the bees in school (if we’re lucky!), but very few of us are taught even the most basic principles of consent. Having good consent politics and practicing consent regularly in your relationships will communicate how much you care about, as well as respect, yourself and your partner(s). Let renowned sex worker and professional consent advocate Andre Shakti help you navigate a seemingly self-explanatory topic with both nuance and entertainment! Learn why consent is hella sexy while acknowledging why being sexy doesn’t automatically imply consent. Feel more empowered to verbally communicate your wants and needs to your partner. This includes the ability to say “No, thank you” without worrying about perceived consequences, as well as how to manage feelings of entitlement over other's attention or bodies. Engage in comprehensive, sex-positive discussions around rape culture, slut-shaming, and victim-blaming. Stock your arsenal with new tips and tricks on how to incorporate consent into the bedroom in a way that doesn’t totally kill the mood. Shed the shame and stigma associated with enthusiastically endorsing what and who you desire. Consent: it’s the most accessible and ethical sex toy on the planet!
Andre Shakti is a Bay Area educator, producer, activist, and professional slut devoted to normalizing alternative desires, de-stigmatizing sex workers and their partners, and not taking herself too seriously. She writes about sex work for Cosmopolitan and Harlot.com and is on the organizational committee for Atlanta’s Sex Down South Conference, which just celebrated its inaugural run in October 2015. She recently had an essay published in the anthology Coming Out Like A Porn Star.
